Prologue
Leaning his back against the gray stone washed walls with his hand on the back of his neck rubbing at the taut muscles. He was still sore from the fight yesterday. Mother fuckers should never have gone after the old man.
Oh, you best believe he sent a couple of them fuckers to the other side though. He wasn’t a killer by any means but something was either right or wrong and what they did was wrong on every single fucking layer.
The old man never hurt no body. His only misfortune was being known for his ways back in the day. So what if he robbed from the wealthy and gave to the poor. So what if he murdered the fuckers he searched for and hunted them down for raping two little girls. Some referred to him as Robin Hood but to those that knew who he really was, they knew he was worse than Clyde. Wouldn’t you know it he had his own Bonnie.
Hell I take my hat off to him. That was a man anyone could admire, yeah the shit he did was bad but the reasons as to why definitely had plenty of merit to them.
I remember playing in my front yard when I was five years old. We lived in Asheville, North Carolina where you made sure you were home before the street lights came on. You left your doors unlocked and your windows open.
That day in particular is what started my defiant nature to come out. You see in our small town you respect law enforcement, you assist them in their searches and you never lie to them. What you do not do is something my father did that very same day.
A story had broken out about a string of drug busts mostly marijuana. The police in our little town did not tolerate that shit which was a good thing. The cops had raided the home and a fire fight had ensued. I didn’t find out until later that the bandage on my dad’s leg had come from that night. You see, while I was playing in the front yard with my dump truck I saw a patrol car with his lights on and a hearse following behind with cars behind flashing their lights.
My father hobbled out of the house at that opportune time and walked to the edge of the yard. I saw him standing there for a few moments like he was paying his respects. No, he was waiting on the hearse to come by. My father reared back and spit on the car. I sat there stunned, you didn’t dishonor the dead nor did you disgrace them. It was common sense my mother had told me.
Still, seeing my father do those things had me at first thinking if that was what you were supposed to do and if it was okay to do something like that. I decided that wasn’t something you were supposed to do.
That night my father did something else that caused my life to change for ever. I was only five years old.
I was sitting on our couch watching cartoons waiting on my mom to get home and make dinner while my dad was asleep in his recliner with a bottle in a brown paper bag in his hand. I kept staring at the clock on the wall anticipating the minutes until she should be home.
Tasmania Devil had just come on and a car door shut. My mom was home, I was excited because I missed her and she had pulled a double shift today as she had told me that was what they called it.
I jumped off the couch and began to make my way to the front door; however, a loud crash followed by my father yelling and cursing. I looked to my mom as she was walking through the door and then I saw her get knocked into the wall and the bag she had been holding fell to the ground.
Something inside of me snapped. I ran to my dad and began kicking and hitting him, yelling at him for hitting my mom. That was something you just didn’t do. Next thing I knew I got kicked in the ribcage and kicked halfway across the room. My mom was yelling and crawling over to me. I remembered telling myself I needed to get up and go to her only before I could she had curled her body around mine and took all of the kicks from my dad that had been intended for me.
She had whispered in my ear to quiet so I bit my lip to do as she had said. Later that night after my mom struggled to make something for dinner like sandwiches which I helped her. Followed by giving me a bath and then she helped me into my pajamas, kissed my forehead and tucked me into my bull dozer sheets. I fell asleep with her humming to me.
That night I was woken up by my mom shaking me gently. I looked at the alarm clock and saw it was three in the morning. Noticing how she had her finger pressed to her lips signaling to me to be quiet I got up, grabbed the back pack she had for me and shrugged my arms through the straps. I followed her out of my room, down the hall, past the bathroom and through the living room. I looked to my left while rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I saw my father in his recliner passed out, a steady rise from his chest.
My mom slowly creaked the door open and we eased out of it. She hurried me to the car and made sure I was buckled up tight. Then she hurried to the car and as soon as she got in I heard the door locks engage. She started it up, threw it in reverse and began backing out of the driveway. A loud pop, pop, pop made the car shake and my mom screamed. She looked back at me seeing that I was okay she floored the pedal to the floor. The tires were squealing and then another pop, pop sounded against the car. Looking over my shoulder I saw my dad had a gun in his hand.
She told me to get down and so I did. The next minute another pop sounded and the back glass made a ting noise. Driving even faster my mom steered the car out of the neighborhood, to the next town over and then on the highway. I didn’t know where we were going or what was going to happen but I knew one thing. I wouldn’t get beat in the morning for waking up by my father. With that thought I had drifted back asleep.
Waking up to a car door shut I saw my mom making her way around the front of the car and coming to get me.
“Malcolm, if you need to potty you can do it here.”
“Yes mama. I got’s to go real bad!” I said, I did have to go pretty bad.
She followed me to the bathroom after getting the key from inside. I peed and washed my hands, my mama would have my butt if I didn’t. Leaving the bathroom I saw that while I was peeing she went and got us a few things and even my favorite soda pop.
“Mama, where are we going?” I asked, drinking my pop and eating a sandwich.
“We are going to a friend of mama’s. He offered to take us in a long time ago.”
“Okay, will he hit you or me?” I asked. I didn’t mean to bring a tear to her eye.
“No baby, he won’t. He would cut off his own arm then hit a woman or a child baby.” She said. I noticed a look on my mama that I had never seen before. Later on in life I learned it was truly happiness that reflected on her face.
“Okay mama, I’ll try to like him then.” I said with all seriousness of a five year old.
I didn’t know how long we traveled but it took us all day and almost half the night to finish getting to where ever we were headed. The first thing I noticed was the huge big black pickup truck and the motorcycle in the driveway. They both looked nice.
As soon as we had stopped the car a man came out of a house followed by a big black dog. He was the tallest man I had ever seen. His hair was grey and long, he had a pony tail! I couldn’t believe it. Only girls have pony tails. He also had a long beard that was grey. He had on a tight black t-shirt and some black sweat pants.
The dog was barking fervently so at us but when the man put his hand down the dog stopped. He sat down on his haunches and just stared.
I watched as my mom got out and went to the man, I saw as he touched the bruise on her face and what I noticed had me bunching up in fear. The man had balled his fist and just when I was grabbing the handle to get out of the car to go to her I saw him unclench said fist and pull her into his embrace.
After a few moments I opened up my door and climbed out. The big dog immediately came over to me and I did just like my mama told me to. I held my hand out for the dog to sniff it so he would know I wasn’t a threat. He licked it! I had been giggling.
That got my mama and the man’s attention as they pulled apart and they came over to me.
“Malcolm, I would like you to meet Garrison. Garrison, this is my son Malcolm.” I peered up at him and thought he was a lot bigger than my dad; it wouldn’t take much for him to squish me.
Yet what the man did helped shape me into the man I am today. He dropped to one knee so he was closer to my height and held out his hand.
“Malcolm, it’s nice to meet you. I intend to help you and your mom and keep y’all as safe as I can. Will that be okay with you?” I bit my bottom lip and decided to ask him a question. Let’s see I thought.
“Two conditions.” I then grew braver and put my hand on my hips.
The man just smiled at me and after he got his composure back together he said,
“Ok, let’s hear it. Name em’.”
“First thing, there will be no laying your hands on my mama in anger. You don’t like something you can walk away and go hit something else, even me but you will not hit my mama.” The man could see I was close to losing it and said,
“Tell you what? If you ever see me hit your mama or if I ever hit you, I give you permission to find a gun and shoot me right here.” The man pointed at his head. It took a moment for that all to sync in my mind. Yes so far so good.
“Okay then. Last can I get a fish?” I smiled.
The man dropped his head and his body was shaking with laughter.
“Tell you what Malcolm, after we get y’all settled we will go and get you the best fish you like that money can buy. How does that sound?” I stood there for a moment and realized the man wasn’t lying to me. I don’t know how I knew that, I just did.
I stuck my much smaller hand in his and shook it.
“You got a deal Garrison.” I said.
The man stood up asked mama for her keys and he preceded to get our few bags out of the car after he told us to go ahead and go inside and make ourselves comfortable.
Garrison’s house was amazing. It was three bedrooms and two bathrooms. His living room looked like a Harley Davidson magazine, his kitchen looked like my mamas dream kitchen that she would sometimes talk about. He had a big back yard and even a hammock I learned that was what it was called when my mama walked up behind me while I had been looking out the sliding glass door in the living room.
After Garrison had returned he showed us the rooms we would be staying in. He first showed us mamas and it was decorated in her favorite color, purple. How he knew that was beyond my mind at the time. I was about to beat him up when I saw a tear come out of my mama’s eyes. I ran to her and hugged her instead.
“What’s wrong mama? It’s your favorite color ain’t it?” She placed her hand on my back and rubbed it. It was her way of comforting the both of us at the same time.
“Yes baby, I’m happy, I hope someday you will grow up to be a great man.”
“I will mama; you’ll see that I do too!” I nodded my head in affirmation.
Next he led me to the room that was to be my room. I was a little scared, unsure of what I would find. What if it was purple too? No, it wasn’t.
He opened the door and the first thing I noticed was the bed sheets. They were bulldozers! The walls were yellow and everything in the room was like a bulldozer. The lamp, and the rug, even the curtains.
“This room okay with you bud?” Was he serious? My dad never did anything like this for me. My mom had gotten me what she could when she could and I loved her dearly for it. But this room is the coolest!
Instead I hurled my body into his and as if he was expecting it he had his arms opened and waiting for me. I hugged him and buried my face and cried. I cried for the beatings, I cried out for seeing my mom being beaten and unknowingly I even cried myself to sleep. That day being so much and everything else is what did it.
The man, Garrison, held me the entire time and when he was sure I had cried all of the tears out he carried me to my new bed, pulled the sheets down and laid me under them. I had slept well into the next morning; finally, feeling extremely safe.
Guess what? The very next day after we had breakfast that mama cooked we went and got me a fish. An angelfish to be exact, I named him Dozer.
That first year we lived with Garrison I went to my first school and had an awesome first day. I learned how to ride a bike and I even learned how to swim.
Seven months into living with Garrison it was Christmas. It didn’t use to be my favorite time of the year but this year it became as such. Not because of the presents I got or because of the feast we got to eat or even all of the games we got to play.
It was all because on Christmas day Garrison asked me if it was okay of he started dating my mama. See my parents weren’t married. My mama had hoped he would straighten out but that night he went from just beating on her to attacking me she was done.
The fifth time in my life I hurled my small body into his and asked him a question that was just between us two.
Three years later found me at eight years old and at the clubhouse that Garrison was a member of, well he was actually the president. We were all hanging out there because it had come out that a threat had been made on some of the members in the club. We lost a man and even one of the brothers took the fall for killing some of the threats.
What I didn’t know is that my dad had been one of those threats only they were never able to find him.
Four years later I was twelve and got my very first gun. A small little .22 shotgun for my birthday. That day Garrison answered the question I had asked him when I was six for Christmas. He asked me if he could ask my mom to marry him. I readily agreed.
However, what I wasn’t expecting was the following year for me to walk my mama down the aisle and then having Garrison grab my hand and making sure everyone knew he wasn’t just marrying my mama. He was marrying me too. Also since my dad’s name wasn’t on my birth certificate he asked me if I would like to be his son and take his last name.
Now being that my soon to be father was a member of an MC. What do you think my response was? Hell yes! My mama brought her hand to her mouth and everyone around us was booming with laughter.
That was the third time I had seen Thomas Garrison cry.
The next year found me fourteen years o
ld and just starting high school. My dad had made sure that we all had someone watching us making sure we were protected. I was at school on the day my life changed for the worst it would seem but yet later on it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me.
Football practice had ended early and so I caught a ride home with Boomer who was my guard for the day. Getting home I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. I didn’t notice Gamble’s body laying behind the couch who was my mom’s guard, I didn’t notice Titan our Rottweiler wasn’t barking.
I was looking in the fridge for something to eat when I heard the worst sound in my life. It was my mom,
“Greg, stop! No!” She had screamed.
Unsure of what was going on I quietly made my way to my mom and dad’s room. Peeking through the cracked door I saw my birth father Greg on top of my mom with a knife to her throat. Her clothes were ripped from her body as well as his. Something inside of me chilled and I knew what needed to be done.
I walked out and went to my dad’s stash hole; it was behind a picture in the hallway. I grabbed his .9mm, slammed a magazine in, and turned it off safety. Cocked it back and put one in the chamber. I calmly walked to their room, kicked the door and yelled,
“Hey asshole!” I grabbed his attention and he did just what I expected him to.
He turned; unaware of him even being in the room and being that he was alarmed it threw him. He half turned his body and took away the knife at my mom’s throat.
Without waiting another second I brought the gun up, softly squeezed the trigger and out one in the man’s head. Blood and brain matter splattered on my mom and on the back wall behind their bed.
I shrugged my flannel off and put it over my mom so she wouldn’t feel exposed, pulled my cell from my back pocket and called my dad. He answered on the third ring.
“Yo! How was practice?” It never failed, he always made sure to ask because he couldn’t be there for practice but he made it to every single game, regardless if it was in enemy territory or not.
